Barrera's Walk-off Double Completes The Sweep Over The Emmanuel Lions

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - An Eileen Barrera walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two helped the Mount Olive softball team complete the sweep in the doubleheader against the Lions of Emmanuel College in Conference Carolinas action on Sunday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Trojans found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning as Charlene Thompson crossed the plate. After reaching base on a single to the shortstop and stealing second, Thompson advanced to third on a single by Heather Childress. In a steal attempt by Childress, Thompson scored on the throw down by the catcher to the shortstop at second.
  • UMO kept the Lions off the board in the top of the second while putting up a second run in the bottom half of the inning. Madison Morgan reached first on an error by the shortstop and stole second base during a Cassandra Lassiter at-bat. Morgan advanced to third on a passed ball and came home following a throwing error by the catcher on the attempted pickoff at third.
  • Megan Bryant scored the third run of the game giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead. Bryant reached first on a single down the left field line and made her way to second on a fielders choice for Eileen Barrera that got Thompson out at third. A Hannah Burress single to left center scored Bryant from second for the third UMO run of the game.
  • Mount Olive kept Emmanuel scoreless through the fourth, fifth, and sixth, but the Lions found a run on three hits in the top of the seventh inning to hold off the shutout but left one stranded as the Trojans took game one 3-1.

KEY STATS

  • Haley Brogden (W: 10-9) was lights out in the circle for the Trojans as she gave up just one run on six hits and threw nine strikeouts.
  • Thompson, Bryant, and Morgan all tallied a run. 
  • Burress picked up the lone RBI for the Bryant run.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Charlene Thompson started things off hot with a stand-up triple down the right-field line. A sacrifice ground out by Megan Bryant scored Thompson to give UMO a 1-0 lead heading out of the opening inning.
  • Emmanuel found a run in the top of the second to tie things up at 1-1 following a single up the middle that scored the runner from second.
  • Neither team relinquished a run through the next four innings and after a three-strikeout top of the seventh from Mallory Ratcliff, UMO had a chance to win with a walk-off in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Heather Childress singled through the left side to lead off the bottom seventh. She was followed by Eileen Barrera who hit a double to left field that scored Childress from first to give Mount Olive the 2-1 walk-off win.
