MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Mount Olive softball team defeated the Rams of Winston-Salem State University in both games of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The first game of the day began with Charlene Thompson reaching base on a walk and then stealing second. A single by Cassandra Lassiter to center field scored Thompson to give UMO a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.
  • UMO scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead into the third after both Amber Elliott and Thompson scored on a double to right center from Lassiter.
  • A double to left field from Eileen Barrera put a runner in scoring position for Madison Morgan, who recorded an RBI when she hit a single through the right side putting the Trojans ahead 4-0 after three.
  • A single bunt by Elliott followed by a double from Thompson put runners on second and third for Lassiter. Lassiter reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and advanced around the bags to third for the fifth and sixth UMO runs of the game.
  • A Barrera single to left-center field scored Lassiter and put Mount Olive up 7-0 after four innings.
  • Mount Olive picked up their eighth and final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after Lassiter led off with a double to left field. She advanced to third during a groundout by Barrera and came home on a double by Morgan to win the game in six innings.

KEY STATS

  • Cassandra Lassiter led the game with five RBI on three hits in four at-bats. She also led the team with a pair of doubles.
  • Haley Brogden (W: 12-9) collected the win and a no-hitter after retiring 18 batters on seven strikeouts.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Thompson led off game two with a walk and rounded the bags after Lassiter followed with a double to centerfield for the first run of the game.
  • Two more runs came across the plate for the Trojans after a Heather Childress single scored the pair of runners as Childress made a move for second base while Lassiter went towards home plate causing confusion among the Rams defense and resulting in a throwing error by the WSSU catcher on the pickoff attempt of Childress.
  • In the bottom of the second, Barrera came to the plate with bases loaded. She proceeded to hit a single into centerfield that scored Thompson and advanced every other runner a base.
  • Morgan followed Barrera to the plate and was walked, with bases loaded, to scored the second run of the inning.
  • The third and fourth innings were scoreless for both teams but UMO's bats caught fire again in the bottom of the fifth as Alyssa Pickle hit a two-run homer, her third in two games, over the left field wall to put Mount Olive up 7-0 as Morgan ran home on the play.
  • Winston-Salem held off a shutout in game two with a single run in the top of the seventh after the designated player reached base on an error by Morgan on third with the bases loaded to record the run. 

KEY STATS

  • Mallor Ratcliff (W: 12-6) ended a streak of three consecutive no-hitters for the Trojan pitching staff after giving up one run on four hits while striking out nine of 30 batters faced.
  • Pickle's homer in the bottom of the fifth was the juniors third home run in back-to-back days.
