Mount Olive Ends Regular Season With A Doubleheader Sweep Over Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Mount Olive softball team wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader sweep over the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon in Elizabeth City, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Trojans found their way on to the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning with Hannah Burress and Alexis Oliver crossed home plate. Burress reached base on balls and advanced to third on a double to centerfield by Oliver. Burress scored on a passed ball and Oliver came home following a single to left field from Charlene Thompson.
  • UMO added four more in the top fourth to take a 6-0 lead over the Vikings. The inning began with a single to the pitcher from Amber Elliott. Elliott scored following a double to left field from Thompson and Thompson scored on a single to left field from Cassandra Lassiter.
  • A triple by Heather Childress scored Lassiter and Childress came home on a ground out by Eileen Barrera.
  • Mount Olive added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 10-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
  • Breanna Voelker singled to the shortstop and rounded to third following a double by Elliott. A sacrifice bunt by Thompson scored Voelker and advanced Elliott to third.
  • An error by the second baseman allowed Lassiter to reach first and Elliott to score. A Childress double advanced Lassiter to third and put runners in the scoring position. 
  • A single to center field by Barrera scored Lassiter and advanced Childress to third. Madison Morgan came to the plate and singled to left center to score Childress for the 10th and final UMO run.
  • Back-to-back singles for the Vikings put runners on first and second and a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third. A well placed single to center field scored one runner as ECSU fended off the shutout in the game one but lost 10-1 in six innings.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Neither team found a score through the opening two innings. The Trojans found four runs in the top of the third inning taking a 4-0 lead.
  • UMO scored their first run off a solo homer to left field by Cassandra Lassiter. With runners on second and third, A single to center field by Alyssa Pickle scored Heather Childress from third and moved Barrera up a base form second. Megan Bryant reached base on a fielders choice and scored Barrera.
  • After stealing second, Bryant ran home on a single through the left side by Alexis Oliver for the final run of the inning.
  • UMO added three more in the top of the fourth as Amber Parker, Lassiter and Childress all crossed home plate. 
  • Parker scored on a single from Lassiter. A double by Barrera scored Lassiter and advanced Childress to third. Childress came home on a passed ball for an unearned run to give UMO a 7-0 lead.
  • Charlene Thompson led off the top of the sixth with a single to the shortstop and then advanced to third after a stolen base and a passed ball. Lassiter came to the plate and hit a double to right center scoring Thomspon. 
  • Runners loaded the bases leading up to an Alyssa Pickle at-bat who was walked to first and scored Lassiter as Childress and Morgan each advanced a base.
  • Megan Bryant reached on a fielders choice that tagged Pickle out at second but scored Childress and advanced Morgan.
  • Amber Elliott came to the plate and closed out UMO's day with a two-RBI double to center field putting the Trojans up 12-0 to win the game.

KEY STATS

  • Haley Brogden (W: 13-9) pitched four innings where she struck out seven batters of the 12 she faced. 
  • Megan Mills came in in the fifth inning and struck out one of eight batters faced and gave up three hits but held on to the shutout victory for UMO.
