BURLINGTON, N.C. - Mount Olive's softball season came to a close today as the Trojans dropped both games on opening day of the 2019 Conference Carolinas Softball Championship Tournament hosted by King University in Burlington, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The teams went through the opening two innings scoreless despite the Trojans having a good chance to score with three runners on base in the bottom of the second.
  • The Bobcats found the scoreboard first in the top of the third as Lees-McRae put three runs up over the Trojans to take the lead.
  • LMC's defense remained strong keeping UMO off the scoreboard through the next three innings but could not get the shutout as Mount Olive found two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Charlene Thompson and Cassandra Lassiter were the two Trojans that scored the runs, while Heather Childress and Eileen Barrera were each credited with an RBI.
  • Unfortunately, UMO could not complete the comeback as they left two runners stranded on base, dropping the first game of the tournament 3-2.

KEY STATS

  • UMO recorded eight hits while scoring just two runs and left 10 runners on base in game one.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Neither team found a score in the opening but the Tornado of King found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning to get things started.
  • Mount Olive responded with three runs in the top of the third taking a 3-1 lead over King.
  • Charlene Thompson was walked following a ground out by Amber Elliott that began the inning. A single to center by Cassandra Lassiter advanced Thompson to second, while Thompson and Lassiter each advanced a bag after Heather Childress was walked.
  • Eileen Barrera grounded out but Thompson scored while Lassiter and Childress advanced to third and second.
  • A single up the middle from Madison Morgan scored the two runners to give the Trojans their 3-1 lead.
  • King closed the gap to one, following an RBI double in the bottom of the third, but the Trojans reopened a two-run lead in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Lassiter that scored Elliott putting UMO up 4-2.
  • The Tornado came back to knot the score at four runs each in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Mount Olive was held scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh while keeping King off in the fifth and sixth.
  • The Trojans, however, could not keep King off the scoreboard in the seventh as the Tornado hit a walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded to win 5-4 and knock the Trojans out of the tournament.

KEY STATS

  • Mount Olive tallied four runs on seven hits and left six runners stranded on base.
  • Mallory Ratcliff and Emily Chaisson split time in the circle with Ratcliff pitching 3.2 innings and Chaisson the final 3.1. Between the two, the Trojans gave up five runs on nine hits.
