Trojans Fall To UNC 99-48

Tommarah Harris led the University of Mount Olive with 11 points, but it was not enough to overcome Division I University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as the Trojans fell 99-48 in Chapel Hill, N.C. in preseason women's basketball exhibition Monday night. The game marked the first time Mount Olive women's basketball has faced an ACC opponent.

Mount Olive in the first quarter went down early and UNC opened up the contest with a three-pointer. Jada Bacchus evened up the game for the Trojans 44 seconds into the first quarter. N'Dea Bryant tied the game with a jumper at the 8:26 mark and started a 16 point run by the Tar Heels.

Rachel Fehl stopped the run with a three-pointer with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter and the Trojans trailed 19-8. The Tar Heel lead extended to 20 as the first quarter drew to a close.

Tommarah Harris started off the second quarter scoring for Mount Olive with a three-pointer 19 seconds in and brought the deficit to 30-17. The Tar Heels however, continued to press as they responded with seven unanswered points. The UNC lead grew to as high as 42 before halftime as the Tar Heels went into the locker room ahead 60-18.

The third quarter did not see a change as UNC pushed to lead to 47 and never looked back.

Harris finished with a team high 14 points. Kiara Jones finished with a near double-double as she finished with eight points and eight boards.

Trojan senior Shy'lia Buie talked about how the new format [new in 2015-16 games are now played with four quarters instead of two periods] in college women's basketball has changed the tempo this year.

"It is really weird to me because it kind of takes you out of the game. It's tough going from eight minute quarters in high school to 20 minute halfs in college, then back to 10 minute quarters."

Mount Olive will kick off the 2015-16 regular season on Friday November 13 against Catawba College in Charlotte, N.C. as part of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge.
