Second Quarter Pushes Mount Olive Past North Greenville 71-49

Mount Olive used a 22-9 run in the second quarter to propel themselves past North Greenville 71-49 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball Saturday night in Tigerville, S.C. Arieal Johnson and Ni'Ya Styles combine for 26 points in the contest.

Mount Olive (6-7 Overall, 4-3 Conference Carolinas) opened up the game with the first four points. North Greenville (3-9, 1-5) bounced back and put up five unanswered points. The teams continued to exchange blows in what became a 14-14 draw going into the second quarter.

Just under two minutes into the second Johnson made a free throw that started the big 22-9 run. In the outburst the Trojans went 4-8 from three point range. The Crusaders were able to take some momentum headed into the half as they scored the last point of the half trailing 36-23.

The third quarter Mount Olive did not let off the gas as free throws by Tommarah Harris spouted off 14 unanswered points. Erika Cobb stopped the Trojan run with a bucket as the Crusaders trailed 52-27. Mount Olive never allowed the lead to dip below double digits as the lead continued to grow to as large as 29 with 9:53 left in the fourth quarter. 

Tache Smothers picked up the contest's final points as her jumper sealed the win as Mount Olive got back in the W column.

Four Trojans scored in double figures. Johnson (13), Styles (13), Harris (10), and Kiara Jones (10) all contributed double digits nights for Mount Olive. Jones also had 14 boards to chalk up a double-double. Johnson was near to a double-double of her own as she fell one rebound short and finished with nine.

Mount Olive will return to Kornegay Arena Wednesday night to take on Emmanuel College at 5:30 p.m. The last time out the Trojans fell 66-60 to the Lions. The game will also be apart of William Lee Trucking night.
