UMO Falls To Catawba 94-81 In Season Opener

HICKORY, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team fell to Catawba College 94-81 Friday afternoon in Hickory, N.C.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Mount Olive and Catawba were slow out of the gates as neither team was able to break a 2-2 early tie until 7:02 remaining in the opening quarter when the Indians made a jumper that gave them the lead.
  • The Trojans then went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead 9-4 with 5:22 remaining.
  • The lead exchanged hands for the remainder of the quarter with Catawba holding a slim 20-19 cushion heading into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Felecity Havens gave the Trojans the lead 21-20 after she made a layup 17 seconds into the second quarter.
  • UMO built up a six-point lead before the Indians were able to stop the Trojans' run at the 6:20 mark.
  • The lead then changed three times before the halftime horn sounded with Catawba holding a 36-32 advantage.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Mount Olive came out for the second half and immediately went on an 8-0 run to begin the third quarter forcing Catawba to call a timeout with UMO leading 40-36 at the 8:41 mark.
  • The Indians responded out of the timeout with four unanswered points to tie the game at 40 with 7:31 remaining.
  • The lead again changed hands multiple time with Catawba holding the lead for most of the quarter taking a 62-57 lead into the final quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Catawba maintained their lead for the rest of the game allowing UMO to get with one, but did not allow the game to be tied taking the 94-81 victory.

KEY STATS

  • Felecity Havens led all Trojan scorers with 29 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
  • Ni'Ya Styles and Jada Bacchus both had double-digit point performances with 13 and 11 points respectively.

NOTES

  • Mount Olive outshot Catawba 46.0-to-41.9% from the field and won the defensive rebound battle 28-to-25.
