Trojans Get Back On Track With 80-71 Win Over Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team defeated the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University 80-71 in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon at Tysinger Gymnasium in Central, S.C. Three Trojans scored in double-digits while three also posted double-digit rebounds in the nine-point win.

Play-by-Play

FIRST QUARTER

  • Junior Jada Bacchus put the Trojans on the scoreboard first with a layup 56 seconds into the game off the assist from Azariah Fields.
  • Southern Wesleyan went on a 6-2 run over the next 90 seconds to take a two point, 6-4, lead over Mount Olive.
  • The Warriors went on a 10-0 run following a free throw by Bacchus to lead by 11 points, 16-5, late in the first quarter.
  • UMO scored six points throughout the remaining minutes of the opening quarter, but SWU held on to a nine-point lead, 20-11, heading into the second ten minutes.

SECOND QUARTER

  • A three-point jumper in the opening seconds of the second quarter put the Warriors up 12 points, 23-11.
  • The Trojans countered with a 9-2 run that pulled them within five points of the Warriors, 25-20, with 6:38 remaining in the half.
  • Back-to-back layups by Felecity Havens put UMO within four points, 30-26, as the clock ticked under the four minute mark.
  • Mount Olive fought back to tie the game at 35 all following a layup by Bacchus with 46 seconds remaining and took the lead on the and-one free throw.
  • A pair of free throws by Kelly Post gave UMO a slim two-point, 38-36, lead heading into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER

  • UMO opened up a four-point lead following a Zarya Poulava layup that put the score at 44-40 with 7:25 on the clock.
  • SWU closed the gap to one point, 44-43, but the Trojans took off on a 10-0 run to lead 54-43 at the 4:14 mark.
  • Mount Olive closed out the third quarter scoring six more points to hold a 60-49 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • A Hope Toliver layup put the Trojans up 13 points, 62-49, 30 seconds into the fourth quarter.
  • UMO held a 12 point lead until the 5:31 point when SWU began to cut the Trojan lead down to six points, 67-61, at the 4:14 mark following a 12-5 Warrior run.
  • The Trojans went back up by 12 points, 78-66, following a pair of Makayla Nichols free throws with 63 seconds remaining in the game.
  • In the final seconds Southern Wesleyan led a 5-2 run but came up short as Mount Olive went on to an 80-71 victory.

KEY STATS

  • Three UMO athletes reached double point figures led by Felecity Havens (29), Jada Bacchus (15), and Hope Toliver (14).
  • Kelly Post had a career-high 11 rebounds in the contest to lead the Trojans.
