Trojans Season Ends In Conference Carolinas Semifinals

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The No. 4 Mount Olive Trojans fell to the Lions of No. 1 seeded Emmanuel College 77-64 on Thursday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2019 Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship Tournament at the Shaw Athletic Center in Franklin Springs, Ga.

Play-by-Play

FIRST QUARTER

  • The Trojans found the scoreboard first as Azariah Fields hit a three-pointer at the 8:17 mark to give UMO a 3-0 lead.
  • A Kelly Post layup and a Jada Bacchus free throw extended the Mount Olive lead to 6-0 as the clock hit the 7:37 mark.
  • Emmanuel chipped away at the Trojan lead to knot the score at six-all, but Felecity Havens hit her first basket of the night, a three-pointer, to put UMO back up by three, 9-6.
  • An and-one conversion by Makayla Nichols extended the Mount Olive lead back out to six, 12-6, before the Lions trimmed the lead to one after a 5-0 spurt that put the score at 12-11 with 1:56 to play in the first quarter.
  • Havens hit another three to give UMO a 15-11 lead, but the No. 1 seed went on a 5-2 run to close the opening quarter and cut the UMO lead to one point, 17-16.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Mount Olive scored five points on a Bacchus layup and Havens three to go up by six-points again, leading 22-16.
  • The Trojans held that six-point lead until the 5:58 mark as they led 27-21, but the Lions came back to tie the score at 27 all before the minute was over.
  • Emmanuel took the lead, 31-28, following a 4-1 run, but Mount Olive was not deterred as they climbed back to knot the score at 33 all at the 2:14 mark following a 5-2 run.
  • The remaining minutes were an up-and-back game as the teams traded possessions while only the Trojans scored on a pair of free throws to hold a slim 35-33 lead as the horn rang for halftime.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Mount Olive took a four-point lead following a layup by Hope Toliver out of halftime and they held it as Havens hit a jumper to keep the lead 39-35 with 7:47 left in the third.
  • Emmanuel went on a 7-0 run to take a three-point 42-39 lead but a three-pointer by Kelly Post knotted the score as the clock ticked under six minutes.
  • The Lions took an eight-point lead following the 8-0 run that put the score at 50-42 in favor of the host squad as the clock neared four minutes.
  • UMO remained calm and chipped away at the EC lead to overcome the deficit and take a one-point lead, 51-50 with 21 seconds remaining in the third following the 9-0 run.
  • EC hit a three just before the buzzer to hold a two-point 53-51 lead as the teams entered the final quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • A pair of threes and two layups by the Lions gave the No. 1 seed a 12 point lead, 63-51, as the teams hit the five and a half minute mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Mount Olive scored 13 points while Emmanuel tallied 14 to hold on to their double-digit lead through the remaining five minutes of the game, as the No. 1 Lions held off the No. 4 Trojans to advance to the championship game with the 77-64 win.

KEY STATS

  • Felecity Havens tallied 26 points and nine rebounds in the contest to finish her career with 2,080 points and 943 rebounds. 
  • Kelly Post was the only other Trojan to join Havens in double figures with 14 points and tallying eight rebounds.

Mount Olive's season comes to a close with their run to the semifinals of the 2019 Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship Tournament following the loss to Emmanuel. The Trojans finish the season with a 17-11, 12-8 record and will return to action next season at Kornegay Arena for the 2019-2020 season.
