BRISTOL, Tennesse - The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team defeated the Tornado of King University 62-56 in Conference Carolinas action in Bristol, Tenn. Saturday afternoon. UMO improves to 9-3 overall and 6-2 in conference, while King falls to 6-7, 3-4.
INSIDE THE SCORE
Mount Olive gained the lead from the opening bucket and went on a 17-to-7 run right out of the gate and with 2:31 left in the opening quarter King responded with four points and UMO lead by six after the first.
The second saw the Trojans build off their lead and utilize a short eight-point run midway through the quarter to push the advantage to as large as nine. The Tornado, however, had a run to end the frame scoring six unanswered points to draw the deficit down to one as Mount Olive led 29-28 heading into the break.
The third quarter was tied twice before King took their first lead of the game at the 4:23 mark on a four-point run to lead 41-38 with 3:26 left in the quarter. UMO answered with four points of their own to regain the lead, but once again King had the final points of the quarter and the game was tied at 42 heading into the final frame.
The final quarter started with a 13-to-3 run by the Trojans that boosted them to a 10-point lead with under four minutes. King bounced back from the UMO run and put across eight unanswered points to counter the Trojans' run, but it would not be enough as Mount Olive held on for the 62-56 victory.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
The Trojans were led by Jada Bacchus with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Azariah Fields, Ivanda Hujakova, and Kelly Post all had double-digit scoring afternoons with 15, 13, and 11 points respectively. Post also joined Bacchus with a double-double grabbing 11 rebounds.
KING LEADERS
The Tornado were led by Ryleigh Fritz with a team-high 18 points.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the fourth quarter when UMO used a 13-to-3 run to bounce back to a double-digit lead that helped the Trojans hold on for their 62-56 win.
