Women's Lacrosse Downs Young Harris 15-3 For Second Win

Mount Olive reeled off 13 unanswered goals en route to the program's second victory, a 15-3, non-conference women's lacrosse decision over Young Harris College Sunday afternoon at Amon Field.

Eleven different Trojans found the back of the net in the team's highest scoring performance since the season-opener. Mount Olive (2-3) got three goals from junior Kara Lyon and two apiece from Candace Corkin and Maddie Biggar during the run. Showing off their passing skills, the Trojans recorded 13 assists on their 15 goals, including three each from Alanna Bauche and Caitlin Sabadish and two each from Laurel Engh and Alysha Kulka.

Young Harris (1-6), also a first year program, brought back bad memories of slow starts from the past two losses. After Biggar struck just 1:50 into the game with a Bauche assist, Young Harris took the ensuing face-off and rushed into the attack zone. After a Trojan penalty, Jaclyn Kernohan scored to even the match.

The goal was the high water mark for the Mountain Lions. Biggar gave the Trojans the lead for good three minutes later. Then the flood gates opened for the Trojan offense. Michelle Scannell delivered a man-up goal with 16:23 remaining in the half, then freshman Laurel Engh recorded back-to-back assists on markers by Sabadish and Sydney Smith less than two minutes apart.

Sabadish returned the favor with assists on goals by Heather Cockburn and Candace Corkin before the half ended.

The Trojans were able to remain on the attack thanks to controlling ground balls, winning 28-20. Mount Olive also took advantage of the Mountain Lions' inability to clear the ball out of their own end. Young Harris successfully cleared just five-of-15 times. Even though the Trojans turned the ball over 22 times themselves, most came while in Young Harris' attack zone.

Mount Olive also got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Sarah Snell who recorded four saves.

Young Harris picked up its defense after intermission, keeping the Trojans off the board for nearly nine minutes. The Mount Lions did not take advantage, however, and Mount Olive held fast to its 9-1 cushion until Lyon's man-up goal with 21:40 left. Lyon scored three of the Trojans' first four goals of the second half, all coming in a span of eight minutes. Alex Crawford added a marker with 20:12 left.

Engh added her first career goal to make it 12 straight goals for the Trojans. After Taylor Lincoln broke the run, Bauche scored to close out the Trojans' scoring.

Scannell led the Trojans with five ground balls, while Cockburn recorded three forced turnovers.

Mount Olive returns to Conference Carolinas action Monday when the Trojans travel to Erskine for a 7 p.m. match. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, but was rescheduled due to potential bad weather.
