Mount Olive Holds Off Catawba 17-14 In Non-Conference Women's Lacrosse

Riann Daziel, Heather Cockburn and Sarah Fischer scored goals in a span of less than two minutes early in the second half as Mount Olive broke away from a one-goal lead and held on for a 17-14 victory over Catawba in non-conference women's lacrosse Thursday at Amon Field. The win was Mount Olive's second in a row and fourth in the Trojans' last five games.

Mount Olive (5-4) saw a three-goal halftime lead cut to one in the first two minutes of the second half. Daziel and Cockburn answered with goals less than a minute apart and Fischer's goal gave the Trojans a 14-10 lead.

Kara Lyon and Michelle Scannell added goals and the Trojans appeared to have the game in hand with a four-goal lead with two minutes remaining. Catawba (1-5) used goals by Ebony Mills and Alyssa Corace to pull within 16-14 with 1:14 left.

Mount Olive won the ensuing draw and the Trojans capitalized on a penalty as Candace Corkin scored her second goal of the contest with 39.1 seconds left to seal the win.

Daziel got Mount Olive on the scoreboard just 37 seconds into the contest and the Trojans built a quick 3-1 lead. Chelsey Bauer scored a pair of goals for Catawba and the Indians took their first lead of the game at 6-5.

Mount Olive came back with five unanswered goals to take the lead for good. Highlighting the Trojans' scoring spurt was Cockburn retrieving a ground ball on the defensive end, making a run up to the attacking end and finishing with her first goal of the game.

The Trojans outscored Catawba 6-2 after falling behind for the only time in the game and went into halftime leading 11-8.

Daziel led Mount Olive with a season-high five goals, while Lyon added three goals. Cockburn, Scannell and Alysha Kulka joined Corkin with two goals apiece. Trojan goalkeeper Sarah Snell recorded nine saves.

Mills had three goals for Catawba. Indians goalkeeper Bethany Davis finished with 15 saves.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Shorter in a non-conference match-up. Game time is 2 p.m. at Amon Field.
