Mount Olive erased a late first half tie with seven unanswered goals and the Trojans ran away from host Chowan 19-6 in non-conference women's lacrosse Thursday night in Murfreesboro, N.C. Heather Cockburn scored a career-high five goals and Riann Daziel added five of her own as the Trojans won their six game in eight outings.
Mount Olive (7-5) never trailed in the contest after Daziel, Candace Corkin and Cockburn gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead 4:05 into the contest. Despite the Trojans' success on offense, the Hawks did not go away.
Down 4-1, Chowan (1-10) held the Trojans to just one goal over the next 14 minutes to pull even at 5-5 on a goal by Mackenzie Reid.
Then Daziel and Cockburn took over. Daziel struck a third time with 3:39 left in the first half to put the Trojans ahead for good. Things snowballed from that point on for the Hawks. Cockburn followed with her second and third goals to give Mount Olive an 8-5 cushion at intermission.
After Chowan tied the game, Mount Olive outshot its hosts 8-0 the remainder of the half.
The Trojans' surge continued when the teams returned to the field. Cockburn, Michelle Scannell, Daziel and Alex Crawford scored in succession in the first 7:35 to turn the contest into a blowout.
Kamile Smith's third goal for the Hawks slowed the momentum only briefly. It was Chowan's only marker of the second half.
Scannell and Caitlin Sabadish added two goals apiece for a Trojan attack that had nine different players find the back of the net. Kara Lyon , Maddy Biggar and Victoria Petricola also added goals for Mount Olive. Crawford, Sarah Fischer and Lyon each had an assist.
Mount Olive won the battle of ground balls as well, 23-22, led by Cockburn with six. In goal, Sarah Snell finished with seven saves.
The Trojans return to action Wednesday afternoon when nationally third-ranked Limestone comes to Amon Field for a 4 p.m. start.
