Katie McGovern's School Record Six Goals Lift Trojans Past Tampa 14-8

Katie McGovern scored four of her school record six goals during a 7-0 run that put University of Mount Olive ahead to stay as the Trojans defeated University of Tampa 14-8 in non-conference women's lacrosse Thursday at Tampa, Fla. McGovern broke a school single-game record she shared with Heather Cockburn and Riann Daziel.

Mount Olive (4-1) took its first lead of the game when Michelle Scannell's goal broke a 3-3 tie and Michelle Fortier's goal with 13:27 left in the first half gave the Trojans a 5-3 advantage. Tampa (1-4) rallied to tie the game on a pair of goals by Morgan Cheripko. After McGovern put the Trojans back on top, Tampa forged the fifth tie of the half on Eileen Barrett's goal with 2:47 left.

The game appeared to be headed to a halftime tie, but McGovern's goal with 18 seconds remaining gave the Trojans a 7-6 advantage at the break. The goal was the first of seven unanswered by Mount Olive.

Cockburn, McGovern and Scannell all scored in a span of just over two minutes to extend Mount Olive's lead to 10-6 with 20:44 left in the second half. McGovern tied the school record with her fifth goal of the game with 18:54 remaining and put home the record breaker 42 seconds later.

Riann Daziel's goal with 11:47 left capped Mount Olive's scoring run and gave the Trojans a 13-6 lead. Tampa snapped its 25-minute scoring drought on Kerry Glenday's goal with 7:22 remaining. After Candace Corkin scored a goal for the Trojans with just over three minutes left in the contest, the Spartans added a final goal with 43 seconds remaining.

Scannell finished with three goals, while Daziel added two goals. Goalkeeper Hannah Knight recorded six saves.

McGovern had scored five goals in a game in two of Mount Olive's first three games this season. Daziel recorded three five-goal games last season in the Trojans' first year of women's lacrosse.

Mount Olive concludes its spring break trip to the Sunshine State Saturday as the Trojans travel to Saint Leo, Fla., to take on Saint Leo University in a non-conference match-up. Game time is 1 p.m.
