Trojans Hold Off Late Second Half Rally To Defeat Belmont Abbey 11-8

Katie McGovern scored the last three goals in University of Mount Olive's seven-goal run to start the game and the Trojans withstood a late rally for an 11-8 victory over Belmont Abbey College in Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse Saturday at Belmont, N.C. The lead grew to as many as eight goals in the second half, but the Trojans failed to score in the final 11 minutes of the contest.

Mount Olive (7-2 Overall, 2-1 Conference Carolinas) opened the game with the first goal coming off the stick of Riann Daziel just 43 seconds into the first half. The opening goal started a 7-0 as the Trojans held Belmont Abbey (6-2, 2-1) scoreless in the first half.

The Crusaders held the Trojans without a goal for ten minutes until Michelle Fortier scored with 15:04. Candace Corkin added the third goals in the half over five minutes later with 10:38 left in the half. After a goal from Michelle Scannell with under 10 to go, Katie McGovern went on a 3-0 run to end the half.

Katy Connery scored the opening goal off a free position shot in the second half with 29:23 left in the game. Kassie Easter added the second goal of the game for the Crusaders with 27:41 to go. Daziel responded back with a goal of her own.

After a MacKenzie Miller free position goal, Mount Olive put up three more goals to extend their lead to eight. Belmont Abbey then went on a run of their own as they held Mount Olive scoreless for the remainder of the match. With 10:17 to go Katelin Glass scored the run starting goal off a free position shot. The remainder of the goals scored were by: Erin Kunkel, Miller, Easter, and Connery.

However the final goal by Connery with 1:13 to go was the last goal for the Crusaders as they were shut down by the Trojan defense.

Mount Olive out shot Belmont Abbey 24-22. Defensively for the Trojans Gina Fader led the team with three caused turnovers and Hannah Knight led the team five of the team's 24 groundballs. Knight also in goal had 10 saves, six of those coming in the second half.

Mount Olive returns to action next weekend as the Trojans travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Conference Carolinas foe in Converse. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
