Three Trojans Score Three Goals Each In 15-5 Win Over Newberry

Candace Corkin, Katie McGovern and Michelle Scannell scored three goals apiece as University of Mount Olive extended its winning streak to five with a 15-5 win over Newberry College in non-conference women's lacrosse Sunday at Newberry, S.C. The winning streak is the longest in the two-year history of the Trojan women's lacrosse program.

After Newberry scored the game's first goal, Mount Olive (9-2) used a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. Riann Daziel and Scannell each scored two goals in the run.

Newberry (4-9) ended the Trojans' run with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, but the Wolves would not get another shot before halftime. McGovern's goal with 89 seconds left gave Mount Olive a 6-2 lead at the break.

The Trojans extended their lead with another 5-0 run to open the second half and put the game out of reach. McGovern's goal with 5:54 remaining gave Mount Olive a 14-4 lead and the margin stayed in double figures the rest of the way..

Defensively for Mount Olive, Gina Fader led the team in ground balls with four. McGovern also added four caused turnovers to go with her four draw controls and two ground balls. In goal, Hannah Knight had nine saves and allowed only five goals. Knight also had three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Mount Olive returns home to Amon Field this week to take on Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.
