Goals by Katie McGovern and Candace Corkin pulled University of Mount Olive within a goal in the second half, but nationally 11th-ranked Pfeiffer broke away for a 9-5 victory over the Trojans in Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse Thursday at Amon Field. McGovern scored three of Mount Olive's five goals. The loss snapped the Trojans' school record five-game winning streak.
Mount Olive (9-3 overall, 3-2 Conference Carolinas) trailed 5-2 before McGovern scored with 19:38 left in the second half. Corkin followed with a goal off a pass from right of the net by Riann Daziel to draw the Trojans within 5-4 with 17:45 remaining.
The Trojans held Pfeiffer (9-2, 4-0) scoreless for 19 minutes until Mackenzie Rolland's goal with 10:56 left began a three-goal spurt in a span of less than two minutes for the Falcons. Britton Muir's caused turnover and ground ball led to Kristi Korn's goal with 9:41 remaining and Ashleigh Kassab added a goal 35 seconds later to give Pfeiffer its biggest lead of the game.
McGovern scored again with 4:42 remaining, but the Trojans never got any closer.
Mount Olive got on the scoreboard first on McGovern's goal eight minutes into the contest. After Pfeiffer came back with a pair of goals, the Trojans tied the game on Michelle Fortier's goal with 8:31 remaining.
The tie was short-lived as Kassab's goal 40 seconds later put Pfeiffer on top to stay. Korn scored with 24 seconds left in the half to give the Falcons a 4-2 halftime lead and Stephanie Athens added a goal just 26 seconds into the second half.
Hannah Knight recorded 11 saves in goal for Mount Olive, while Pfeiffer goalkeeper finished with 16 saves, including five saves on six free position shot attempts.
Mount Olive returns to action Sunday as the Trojans travel to Hickory, N.C., to take on Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference match-up. Game time is 3 p.m.
