Mount Olive Cruises Past Shorter 15-1

Claire Wigler led the University of Mount Olive with three goals as the Trojans defeats Shorter University 15-1 for non-conference women's lacrosse Tuesday afternoon in Rome, Ga. Four Trojans scored at least two goals in the contest.

Less than a minute into the game Mount Olive's (7-0) Maddy Biggar scored the first goal of the game at the 29:08 mark. Riann Daziel one minute later was fouled and made good on her free position shot to give Mount Olive a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans controlled the entire first half as Shorter (0-2) was kept off the board as Mount Olive racked up 10 more goals before halftime. Wigler scored three of her four goals in the first half and two of them were back-to-back only :42 apart.

Kristen McGovern scored three goals, Alysha Kulka had two and Candace Corkin, Wigler, and Daziel scored on goal apiece in the final thirteen minutes of the first half. Neither team could manage a goal in the last 9:46.

In the second half the scoring frenzy halted as only four shots found the back of the net. Mount Olive struck for the first goal of the second half off the stick of Katie McGovern. At the 14:31 mark Sarah Fisher added her name to the list of Trojans who scored in the contest as she scored on a free position shot.

Shorter did make it into the score books with 1:44 left in the game as Mia Wiggins scored off a pass from Kari Chambers. The one goal was all the Hawks could manage as Kali Cook-Grisewood got the final goal of the game with :14 left and Mount Olive picked up the win.

Hannah Knight made her first appearance of the season in front of the net for the Trojans and surrendered one goal off 11 shots on target and had 10 saves. Corkin led the team in groundballs with four and Gina Fader forced four turnovers.

Mount Olive continues its spring break road trip with a stop at Rollins College tomorrow. Game time is 7 p.m.
