Trojans Fall To Florida Southern 11-8

Katie McGovern led the University of Mount Olive with four goals, but the Trojans fell 11-8 to Florida Southern College 11-8 for non-conference women's lacrosse in Lakeland, Fla. Saturday afternoon. Mount Olive had the lead two times in the contest but was unable to make a comeback in the final five minutes.

Mount Olive (7-2) surrendered the first goal of the game as Florida Southern (5-1) made good on a man-up opportunity and found the back of the net off the shot from Ashley Robertson.

The Trojans clear attempt was successful and ended up in the stick of Katie McGovern to tie the game with 23:57 on the clock. After a timeout, Riann Daziel gave Mount Olive the first lead of the game with 16:53 left before halftime.

The Mocs answered with a goal by Robertson and the game was once again tied.

Mount Olive then went on a two goal run with a free position goal by Katie McGovern with 9:08 to play and Daziel's second goal of the game at the 7:28 mark.

Caitlin Chase for Florida Southern brought the game back to a one goal difference with shot at the 4:43 mark to make the score 4-3. The Mocs added two more goals before the half ended as Robertson nabbed her third goal and with 1:19 to go Megan Asper picked up a goal.

Katie McGovern nailed a shot with one second on the clock off a free position attempt and Mount Olive went into halftime knotted up at five.

Saffron Snethen got the first goal of the second half on a free position shot with 26:13 on the clock. The Mocs did not take long to tie the game up again as just :32 later Robertson scored another goal off the feed from Chase.

Florida Southern scored two more goals before Katie McGovern utilized a man-up opportunity and barried it in the back of the net and Mount Olive trailed 8-7 with under twelve to play. The Mocs however did not let up as they put home three goals in under four minutes to take an 11-7 lead with 6:35 in regulation.

Mount Olive took a shot with 1:35 left and went left however the Trojans jumped on the loose ball and Daziel scored :20 later. The Trojans were unable to complete a comeback as time expired.

Defensively Gina Fader led the team with three groundballs. Brittany Barron added two groundballs and three forced turnovers. In goal Hannah Knight picked up eight groundballs and 12 saves on 23 shots.

Mount Olive will return home to Amon Field on Wednesday as the Trojans host Slippery Rock at 6 p.m.
