Riann Daziel and Claire Wigler scored six goals apiece and Alysha Kulka added five goals as nationally 17th-ranked University of Mount Olive defeated Bloomsburg University 19-6 in non-conference women's lacrosse Wednesday at Amon Field. The Trojans have won 13 of their last 14 home games dating back to the 2014 season.
Mount Olive (7-1) needed only 21 seconds to get on the scoreboard as Riann Daziel scored almost immediately off of the opening draw. Wigler added a goal just two minutes, but Bloomsburg came back with a free position goal by Taylor Turner to pull the Huskies within 2-1 with 26:23 left in the first half.
Caitlin Sabadish answered for Mount Olive 25 seconds later and Saffron Snethen followed with a goal with 24:33 remaining to trigger a 7-0 Trojan run. The goals by Sabadish and Snethen were the first in three games scored by Trojan players other than Daziel and Wigler.
Wigler scored three straight goals in a span of four-plus minutes and Kulka added a pair of goals off of spin moves in front of the left pipe as Mount Olive went on to extend its lead to 12-3 at halftime.
The Trojans got off to another quick start in the second half as Wigler scored 26 seconds in. Bloomsburg (2-1) started to gain momentum as Hannah Jaskuta and Turner scored goals less than two minutes apart to cut the gap to 13-5 with 26:33 left to play. But Mount Olive held the Huskies scoreless over the next 24 minutes. Wigler's goal with 21:20 remaining pushed the score to double digits at 15-5.
Wednesday's contest marked the third consecutive contest in which Wigler has scored at least five goals. Wigler and Daziel have scored 16 goals apiece over the Trojans' last three games.
Sarah Snell started in goal for Mount Olive and recorded four saves in 46 minutes.
Bloomsburg was led by Turner and Brigid Kyne with two goals apiece. Brittney Hegarty came off the bench to record five saves in 36 minutes for the Huskies.
Mount Olive plays its second of three consecutive home contests Sunday as the Trojans play host to nationally 19th-ranked Bentley University in a battle of top 20 teams. Game time is 1 p.m. at Amon Field.
