No. 19 University of Mount Olive fell to No. 5 Rollins College 7-5 Saturday night at Amon Field in Mount Olive, N.C. Saffron Snethen led the Trojans with two goals.
Mount Olive (7-2) was able to finally break into the score book halfway through the first half. Snethen put the Trojans up early with her unassisted goal with 9:31 remaining in the opening half. Candace Corkin had a wide open field with 5:33 and charged into the crease and fired home a shot. Corkin's shot found the back of the net and Mount Olive led by two.
Rollins (7-0) was under the gun but the Tars offense kicked into gear in the final minute before halftime. The Tars following a wide shot attempt by the Trojans with :50 left, converted their clear attempt and quickly put their offense to work. Eleven seconds after the clear attempt was converted Rollins' Tyler Thomas found the back of the net for the Tars first goal.
Rollins won the draw control and within 14 seconds of the previous goal, Kallie German tied the game up.
The Tars controlled the start of the second half as Grayson McPhee scored the go ahead goal off a free position shot with 28:35 left in the game.
The following draw control was controlled by Mount Olive who took control and put their offense in motion. Caitlin Sabadish found a hole and received a pass from Claire Wigler on the right side and tied the game up again at three.
Mount Olive again controlled the following draw and Wigler herself found room after passing the restraining line. Wigler beat the Tars keeper and Mount Olive took the lead 4-3 with 24:34 left in the game.
A few minutes later a foul by Mount Olive created a free position opportunity for Rollins. Thomas on the free position tied the game up with 21:51.
The Trojans had their own free position opportunity arise with 12:27 remaining and she made good on her shot attempt and gave Mount Olive the 5-4 lead.
A yellow card on the Trojans allowed Claire Block to take a man-up free position shot and the Tars retied the game up at five with 8:44. Mount Olive was penalized with another yellow card and German for Rollins scored on her free position to take 6-5 lead with 7:29.
After the goal Rollins failed to substitute correctly the Tars were penalized with two yellow cards and the Trojans had a man-up opportunity. However, Mount Olive could not convert in the penalty time and a final foul with a second remaining game the Tars one final free position and they converted on the goal to take the final score 7-5.
Mount Olive will return to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Belmont, N.C. to take on Belmont Abbey College at 4 p.m.
