No. 17 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Catawba 17-5

No. 17 University of Mount Olive defeated Catawba College 17-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse in Salisbury, N.C. Monday afternoon. Mount Olive ended the first and second halves on an 6-0 run.

Mount Olive (9-3) trailed early as Catawba (5-6), struck for the game's first goal 47 seconds into the game. Meredith Jones found the back of the net and put the Indians up ealry. Claire Wigler tied the game with 27:55 and sparked a run for Mount Olive.  The Trojans went on to score two more goals and took a 3-1 lead with 20:22.

The Indians Megan Shortt, tied the game up for Catawba on back-to-back goals with 14:54 remaining in the first half. Riann Daziel broke the tie 32 second later as the Trojans took a 4-3 lead. The goal by Daziel sparked an 6-0 run and Mount Olive went into the half up 9-3.

The Second half started off with two Trojan goals by Candace Corkin and Daziel. Catawba bounced back and scored two goals in a row to bring the Trojan lead down to seven. However, despite the slight comeback, Mount Olive closed the door as an Alysha Kulka goal with 13:53 left in the game sparked another 6-0 run.

Daziel and Saffron Snethen both had a team high four goals in the game. Wigler was close behind with three goals. Corkin led the defense with four groundballs and also added one caused turnover.

Mount Olive will remain on the road as the Trojans travel to No. 11 Limestone this Saturday in Gaffney, S.C. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The game will also be broadcasted on the Lacrosse Sports Network.
