Women's Lacrosse Drops Overtime Heartbreaker To Lenoir-Rhyne

Mount Olive, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team fell to Lenoir-Rhyne University in two overtimes, 9-8, in NCAA DII women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST HALF

  • Lenoir-Rhyne struck first, scoring the first goal of the game on an unassisted goal by Alyssa Slack with 21:25 left in the half.
  • The Trojans responded with back-to-back goals by senior Saffron Snethen and freshman Claire Murray that gave UMO a 2-1 lead with 15:23 remaining in the period.
  • Following a Lenoir-Rhyne goal, Mount Olive ran off five unanswered scores to take a 7-2 advantage with 2:37 left in the opening half.
  • Just before the horn, LRU's Gabby Sousa tallied her second goal of the afternoon to trim the Trojans' lead to 7-3 at the halftime break.

SECOND HALF

  • The Bears opened the second half on a tear, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 4:22 of the second half to cut UMO's advantage to 7-5.
  • Junior Micheala Ciciarelli added a score for the Trojans with 24:55 left in the half that increased Mount Olive's lead back to three at 8-5.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne got within a goal after the Bears scored twice to cut UMO's lead to 8-7 with 12:50 remaining in the frame.
  • Neither team could find the back of the net in the final ten minutes until LRU's Alyssa Sack sent the contest to overtime with a goal with just seven seconds left in regulation that tied the game at eight.

FIRST OVERTIME

  • The opening overtime period passed with just one shot being taken, as Ciciarelli fired a shot that was saved by LRU's Ines Flueck with just eight seconds remaining in the first overtime.

SECOND OVERTIME

  • UMO took a shot on goal with 1:48 left as freshman Jackie Kaderabek had her shot saved by Flueck.
  • Out of a timeout, Slack ended the game with her third goal of the contest with 55 seconds left in the second overtime period that gave Lenoir-Rhyne the 9-8 win.

KEY STATS

  • Murray and Snethen led the Trojans with a pair of goals each.
  • Also scoring for the Trojans were Ciciarelli, Kaderabek, senior Kali Cook-Grisewood, and freshman Kali Ferguson.
  • Spending all 65:05 in goal, freshman goalkeeper Sienna Miller (2-1) was credited with the loss, allowing nine goals and making six saves.
  • The Trojans outshot Lenoir-Rhyne, 32-17, in the loss.
