Burke's Six Goals Lead Trojans To Victory

WINGATE, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team defeated the Bulldogs of Wingate University 9-8 in non-conference action in Wingate, N.C. Kiara Burke led the Trojans offense with six points on six goals.

Play-by-Play

FIRST HALF

  • The Bulldogs got the game started scoring back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead in the opening 90-seconds.
  • The Trojans got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute of action as Kiara Burke scored an unassisted goal.
  • Over a five minute window, the Bulldogs went on a 2-1 run as the pair of Wingate goals sandwiched Burke's second goal of the game with WU leading 4-2 with just under 20 minutes to play.
  • UMO closed out the half scoring two goals to enter halftime tied up at four-all. The Trojans goals came from Burke, her third of the half, and Skye Bradley off the pass from Michaela Ciciarelli.

SECOND HALF

  • Wingate came out of halftime on a roll scoring the first two goals taking the 6-4 lead with 26:30 remaining in the game.
  • The Trojans countered with four straight goals, taking an 8-6 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Jordan Shughrue scored the first UMO goal of the half from a Karlie Abbott pass and Burke followed with the fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the game. Shughrue assisted on Burke's fourth goal.
  • Wingate pulled within one point on a goal with five minutes remaining on the clock, but Ciciarelli extended the Trojans lead back to two, 9-7, less than 40 seconds after Wingate's goal.
  • The final goal of the game came from a stick of a Bulldog to close the gap to one as Wingate's rally fell short with the Trojans winning 9-8.
