Trojans Fall To No. 13 Golden Rams In Overtime

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team fell 12-11 in overtime against the Golden Rams of No. 13 West Chester University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Ray McDonald Sr. Track & Field/ Lacrosse Complex in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST HALF

  • The Trojans got things going as they scored the first four goals of the game as Michaela Ciciarelli and Jackie Kaderabek got their names on the stat sheet. Ciciarelli scored first 1:50 into the game off the assist from Kaderabek. Kaderabek then answered with three unassisted goals to give the Trojans the 4-0 lead.
  • West Chester answered with a pair of goals in the course of 17 seconds to cut Mount Olive's lead to two, 4-2.
  • Kiara Burke got on the board with a goal off the assist from Kali Ferguson at 9:28 and Ciciarelli put the Trojans back up by four with an unassisted goal at the seven-minute mark as UMO led 6-2.
  • In the final six minutes of the opening half, the Golden Rams went on a 3-1 run cutting Mount Olives lead to two, 7-4.

SECOND HALF

  • West Chester came out of the intermission on fire scoring three unanswered goals to take the 8-7 lead.
  • Ciciarelli scored her third goal of the game tying the score at eight-all, while Burke scored on the assisted from Ciciarelli taking the 9-8 lead with 19:38 remaining in regulation.
  • WCU tied the game again only for UMO to counter off a goal from Jordan Shughrue again giving the Trojans a one-point, 10-9, lead.
  • West Chester scored at 2:36 to tie the game and took the lead 11-seconds later (2:25) putting the score at 11-10 in West Chester's favor.
  • Shughrue came to the rescue tying the game with 57 seconds left on the clock that ultimately forced the overtime period.

OVERTIME

  • With the game on the line, the teams took to the draw circle with WCU winning the draw. The Golden Rams carried the momentum and scored 39 seconds into overtime to win the golden goal OT period 12-11.

KEY STATS

  • Ciciarelli, Kaderabek, and Shughrue all recorded hat tricks during the game, while Burke added two for the Trojans total 11 goals.
  • Samantha Thomson (L: 5-1) gave up 12 goals on 20 shots faced and made eight saves.
  • UMO tallied 44 ground balls compared to WCU's 29, but WCU won in the draw circle tallying 16 draws to UMO's 10.

The Trojans return to action on Saturday, March 17, as they return to the Ray McDonald Lacrosse Complex for game one of a men's and women's lacrosse doubleheader. UMO's women's lacrosse team will host the Bobcats of Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action at 12 p.m.
