Mount Olive Falls In Nail-Biting Overtime Loss Against Saint Leo

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Mount Olive fell 12-11 in double overtime to the Lions of Saint Leo University on Friday afternoon in nonconference women's lacrosse action at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST HALF

  • Saint Leo scored the opening goal in the tenth minute of action to take a 1-0 lead over Mount Olive.
  • UMO knotted the score on a man-up opportunity by Jackie Kaderabek off the assisted pass from Kelly Young less than a minute later.
  • SLU went ahead again in the 15th minute but the Trojans answered with a pair of goals from Skye Bradley, assist to Meaghan Michaud, and Skylar Grady, assist to Kaderabek, to give UMO its first lead of the game 3-2 with 11:04 remaining in the opening half.
  • The Lions tied the score at three all but an unassisted shot by Tiffany Lee at 4:11 found the back of the net to keep UMO in the lead 4-3.
  • In the final 3:30 of the opening half, Saint Leo dug down deep to string together three goals to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF

  • Mount Olive opened the second half with a goal by Kiara Burke that pulled the score within one, 6-5, two minutes into the action.
  • The Lions reclaimed a two-goal lead after SLU scored off the draw putting the score at 7-5.
  • Kelly Young and Kaderabek each scored a goal but the Saint Leo offense had a response for each as they took a 9-7 lead in the 43rd minute that forced Mount Olive to call a timeout.
  • The Trojans came out of the timeout to score back-to-back goals from Kaderabek and Jordan Shughrue to knot the score at nine-all with 15:13 remaining in regulation.
  • Less than two minutes later Shughrue scored the go-ahead goal giving Mount Olive their first lead since the 4:11 mark of the first half and forced Saint Leo to call timeout and regroup.
  • Saint Leo took advantage of a power-play opportunity to tie the game at 10 all off of a free position shot with 3:18 on the clock.
  • The Lions followed with a go-ahead goal nearly a minute later to take an 11-10 lead with just over two minutes left in the game.
  • With less than a minute to go Shughrue scored on a free-position shot that knotted the game at 11 and had the Trojans calling a timeout to strategize the remaining seconds.
  • Neither team could find a goal and an overtime period was needed to decide a victor.

OVERTIME

  • One overtime period did not quite cut it as neither team found the golden goal to win the game forcing a second OT period.
  • The Lions of Saint Leo found the lucky shot 45 seconds into the second OT period to defeat the Trojans 12-11.

Mount Olive returns to action tomorrow when they take on the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University at the LoConte Family Field on the campus of Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. The Warriors and Trojans meet in the center circle for a first draw time of 12 p.m. in Conference Carolinas action.
