Mount Olive Battles Lees-McRae To 1-1 Double OT Tie

Ellie Barnes' goal in the 59th minute for the University of Mount Olive forces overtime Saturday afternoon at Lees-McRae College, however the match ended in a 1-1 draw after double overtime in Conference Carolinas women's soccer. The Trojans had a shot in the first overtime miss just right and it was the only opportunity that Mount Olive had to take the match in extra time.

The first half Mount Olive (4-5-1 Overall, 2-1-1 Conference Carolinas) had five shots that were unable to break the back of net, however the offensive looked to make the chances count in the second period.

In the second period Mount Olive had an early opportunity on a corner kick but the Lees-McRae (3-5-1, 2-1-1) defense thwarted the Trojans chance to score.

The Bobcat's Sarah Mahar scored the game's first goal in the 56th minute on a shot 20 yards out that went over the Mount Olive keeper's hands.

The Trojans quickly counterattacked in the 57th minute as Nichole Poppe had a shot that was blocked and kept Mount Olive off the board. Two minutes later Poppe made another opportunity count as her cross found Barnes and she chipped a shot over the Bobcat keeper to tie the game at one at the 58:22 mark.

Mount Olive had a scoring opportunity in the 89th minute but a save kept them off the board and overtime was forthcoming if the Trojans held on. Kelsey Cirrito came up with a last minute save with 30 seconds left in the second period and extra time was set up.

After both extra times were played neither Mount Olive of Lees-McRae was able to get the golden goal and the match ended in a tie.

Cirrito had nine saves in goal for the Trojans and of those five came in extra time.

Mount Olive returns to the pitch Thursday as they will travel to Pfeiffer University to play the Falcons in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
