Trojans Top Valkyries 3-2 In Women's Soccer

Nichole Poppe scored the final goal as the University of Mount Olive took a 3-2 victory over Converse College Wednesday night in Spartenburg, S.C. for Conference Carolinas women's soccer. Three Trojans scored in the contest.

Mount Olive (3-2-0 Overall, 2-0-0 Conference Carolinas) surrendered an early goal to Converse (1-4-0, 0-2-0) in the 8th minute. Darby Boyd was able to captilize on a deflection from Alex Marquez's intial shot and found the net for the openning goal. 

The Trojans just :32 later Lauren Power found the equalizer. Poppe's shot bounced off the cross bar and to the feet of Power who scored the putback. In the 25th minute Ellie Barnes sped past her defender and beat the keeper to find the far post and give Mount Olive the lead 2-1.

The second half began with more offensive from the Trojans. A Converse foul set up a free kick for Poppe who found the perfect spot from 25 yards out to score the final goal for Mount Olive. The Trojans held Converse to a 3-1 score until a late goal from Riley Harnet found the net. 

The late goal was the final score as the Trojans held off the Valkyries until the final whistle.

Stephanie McCoy had seven saves on nine shots in goal for Mount Olive.

The Trojans return home to Amon Field on Saturday where Mount Olive will host conference foe Belmont Abbey at 4 p.m.
