Women's Soccer Wins Conference Carolinas Regular-Season Championship With 2-1 Victory Over Limestone

MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina.– The University of Mount Olive women's soccer team collected their first-ever overall Conference Carolinas Regular-Season Championship with a 2-1 victory over Limestone College in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon in Gaffney, S.C. The championship is the first overall in program history and second including divisional titles, last won in 2011, and secure the Trojans the No. 1 seed in the Conference Carolinas Championship.
 
Game Information
The Trojans fought hard to get on the scoreboard first and were able to do so when Sara Berglund found Ashley Lindsey in the 19th minute on a failed clearance from the Saints on a corner kick. A Limestone foul created a chance for Shaunalee Govia to put a ball in the box in the 38th minute. Govia struck the ball and blasted a high looping shot that went better than in the box it went over top of the keepers' hands and into the back of the net to give UMO a 2-0 lead.

Following the halftime break, Limestone answered with a score in the 83rd minute. The goal was the final shot registered by the Saints as the Trojans shut down the remainder of the game and sealed the win.

 
Trojan Leaders
Mount Olive was led by Shaunalee Govia who had the game-winning goal with her only shot on the day. 

Taylor Lewis (10-0-3, 9-0-2) in the game recorded eight saves on nine shots.

Saint Leaders
Limestone was led by Emma Hickson who scored the sole goal for the Saints.

"Words cannot describe what we are feeling as a team right now. Watching the joy in my player's eyes as they celebrated tonight was one of the proudest and happiest moments of my career. This is a special group of young women who have an exceptional bond. I cannot wait to see what else they accomplish this year," said Head Coach Sharif Saber.

Up Next: Mount Olive will take the No. 1 seed into the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Championship with the quarterfinals being hosted at Amon Field on November 9 at 4 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
