Trojans Edge Erskine 5-4 In Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis

Roxanne Chouinard overcame a one-set deficit at No. 2 singles to break a 4-4 tie in the team score as University of Mount Olive defeated Erskine College 5-4 in Conference Carolinas women's tennis Saturday at Walker Tennis Center. The win was the Trojans' first over Erskine in more than a decade.

Mount Olive (12-4 overall, 8-2 Conference Carolinas) led 2-1 after doubles play. Chouinard combined with Francesca Ceppi for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and Alejandra Hernandez and Mariana Gamboa teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

The score was tied 3-3 after Erskine (7-10, 7-3) posted straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 5 singles, while Paulina Delgado won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles for Mount Olive. The Flying Fleet won in three sets at No. 3 singles to take a 4-3 lead, but Jennifer Byrd won 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to even the overall match at 4-4.

Chouinard dropped the first set 6-2, then evened the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. She took the third set 6-3 to clinch her singles win and the team victory.

Mount Olive steps out of conference Sunday as the Trojans travel to Durham, N.C., to take on Division I North Carolina Central. Match time is 1 p.m.
