Women's Tennis Splits Day Two Of The City of Florence College Tennis Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team split their matches on day two of the City of Florence College Tennis Invitational. UMO fell to regional opponent Newberry College in the consolation semis and then went on to defeat Conference Carolinas rival Barton College.

GAME 1 - Consolation Semifinals - vs. Newberry College

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • UMO found itself behind 2-1 after doubles action.
  • The only doubles win for the Trojans came from Nicole La Chappelle and Emma Burroughs at the No. 3 doubles winning 8-1.
  • In singles action, the Trojans won one game but the Wolves picked up three singles wins to pair with their two doubles points to win the match 5-2.
  • Burroughs had a great match as she earned a singles win at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-1.

GAME 2 - vs. Barton College

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • UMO picked up two wins in doubles action heading into the singles rounds leading 2-1.
  • La Chappelle and Burroughs gave the Trojans their first point of the match winning 8-4 at the No. 3 doubles.
  • Barton won No. 2 doubles but Sonja Gärtner and Areej Fareh clinched the doubles round winning 9-8 (7) at the No. 1 spot.
  • In singles action, the Trojans won three matches to win 5-3, as Jennifer Byrd clinched the match winning at No. 5 singles in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
  • Burroughs continued on a run as she picked up the first singles point for UMO win in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
  • After Alex Goffin lost at No. 2 putting the Bulldogs down 3-2, Gärtner defeated the No. 1 Barton player 6-2, 6-1 taking the 4-2 lead.
  • Barton pulled back within a point again after winning the No. 4 match, but Byrd came up clutch for the Trojans winning in three sets to help UMO win 5-3.

UP NEXT

The Trojans are back in action on Feb. 13 when they return to Florence, S.C. to face the Patriots of Francis Marion. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
