Women's Tennis Defeats Erskine 8-1 In Conference Carolinas Action

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over Erskine College on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas competition at the John Neal Walker Tennis Courts in Mount Olive, N.C.

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • The Trojans came out of the doubles round holding the 3-0 advantage over the Flying Fleet. 
  • UMO went in order of finish winning on court 1, 2, and 3 respectively.
  • Sonja Gärtner and Areej Fareh swept the Erskine No. 1 pair winning 8-0.
  • Alex Goffin and Jennifer Byrd brought home the 8-2 win in the No. 2 doubles game giving UMO a 2-0 match lead.
  • Nicole La Chappelle and Emma Burroughs rounded out the doubles sets winning 8-4 over the No. 3 duo from Erskine.
  • UMO nearly completed a 9-0 sweep over Erskine but dropped one singles game to win by 8-1.
  • Jennifer Byrd started off the singles round winning on court five, 6-0, 6-1.
  • Areej Fareh won on court three in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
  • Sonja Gärtner put up a tough fight on court one to come back from being one set down to winning in three sets, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 10-6.
  • Alex Goffin gave the Trojans their seventh point of the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
  • Emma Burroughs was the last Trojan to earn a point as she won 8-5 in a pro set on court six.
  • Nicole La Chappelle dropped her game at singles No. 4, 8-7 (7-5).

MATCH NOTES

  • Order of finish: Doubles (1,2,3); Singles (5,3,1,2,6,4)
  • For the first time this season the UMO women's tennis team won all three doubles points.
