Trojans Fall 5-4 In Close Contest At Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team fell in a close Conference Carolinas match to the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College 5-4 in a midweek contest at Belmont, N.C.

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • Mount Olive came from down one doubles match to lead 2-1 after winning the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles flights respectively.
  • Nicole La Chappelle and Jennifer Byrd tied the match point at one per team following their 8-4 win on court two.
  • Sonja Gärtner and Areej Fareh closed out the doubles round with an 8-7 (7-2) win at the No. 1 flight.
  • The Trojans went 2-4 in the singles rounds as they ultimately fell in the end 5-4 to the Crusaders.
  • Belmont Abbey took two of the first three singles matches with UMO's only win coming from Fareh at the No. 2 flight with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
  • The match score sat tied after the next two singles bouts as BAC took the No. 3 flight, while Gärtner won her singles game in two sets at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
  • BAC won the last point at the No. 6 singles flight as Caroline Carter fell in straight sets.

The Trojans are back in action on this weekend as they travel to Young Harris, Ga., for a pair of non-conference matches. UMO will face Young Harris on Friday, March 30, at 2 p.m. They follow on Saturday, March 31, with a match against North Georgia with a first serve time of 11 a.m.
