More School Indoor Track And Field Records Broken At Gene Anderson Invitational

Dylan Lafond finished second overall and was one of three Trojan runners to break the previous school record in the men's indoor mile, while 2012 Conference Carolinas Women's Cross Country champion Amber Thompson broke her own record in the women's indoor mile as Mount Olive competed in the Gene Anderson Invitational Saturday at Chapel Hill, N.C. Mount Olive is ranked No. 4 in the USTFCCCA Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Southeast Region Top 10 and ranked No. 2 in the USTFCCCA Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field Southeast Region Top 10

Lafond set a new Trojan men's indoor mile record with a time of 4:19.40. Aki Kitagawa and Ronnie Sturgill also finished ahead of Paul Hoffman's school record time of 4:31.92, set in 2011.

Shonterio Brown broke the men's 400 meter record with a time of 52.64 seconds. Brown beat Devonte Jenkins' mark from last year by just .01 seconds.

Ryan Campbell surpassed Sebastian Jackson's school record in the weight throw, recording a distance of 13.66 meters. Jackson posted a distance of 13.28 meters December 1 at the JDL College Kickoff Classic in the Trojans' 2012-13 season opener.

Thompson built on her fall success by surpassing her previous school record time of 5:22.80, set last year. Thompson captured the top two Conference Carolinas Women's Cross Country individual awards, winning 2012 Runner of the Year and 2012 Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Two school records were also broken in women's field events. Reigning Conference Carolinas Women's Field Athlete of the Week Jaynell broke the school shot put record for the second straight meet. After recording a distance of 12.11 meters two weeks earlier at the Winston-Salem State open, Brown posted a distance of 12.37 meters Saturday.

Kanesha Jones set a school record with a distance of 5.10 meters in the long jump. She beat Kierra Butler's record of 4.98 meters, set in 2011.

Saturday's meet was Mount Olive's final competition before the inaugural Conference Carolinas Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. The Conference Championship takes place February 16 at Winston-Salem, N.C.
