Women's Volleyball Drops Pair Of Matches In Weekend Road Trip

University of Mount Olive won the opening set, but Lees-McRae rallied to win the next three as the Trojans fell to the Bobcats 21-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-15 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Friday at Banner Elk, N.C. Britni Johnson led the Trojans with eight kills.

Mount Olive (5-16 overall, 2-7 Conference Carolinas) led for much of the first set before Lees-McRae came back to take a 20-19 lead. Dezirae Mackey sandwiched a pair of kills around a kill by Johnson to put the Trojans ahead to stay. After a Lees-McRae side out, Johnson and Montgomery Register notched kills to complete a set-ending 6-1 run.

The second set was tied 9-9 when Lees-McRae (12-7, 7-3) scored 10 unanswered points to break the game open. Jarlize Cotte recorded a pair of kills during the run and added back-to-back service aces as the Bobcats evened the match at a set apiece.

The Trojans led 16-14 in the third set after a kill by Register, but Lees-McRae used a 4-0 run to take the lead to stay. The Bobcats broke away from an 8-7 lead in the fourth set with a 9-2 run to clinch the match.

Mackey finished with seven kills, while Register added six kills and a match-high four blocks.

Cotte led all players with 11 kills for Lees-McRae.

Mount Olive concluded its weekend road trip with a three-set loss to King Saturday at Bristol, Tenn., falling 25-10, 25-15, 25-17. Danielle Plante led the Trojans with six kills.

The Trojans travel to Pembroke, N.C., Wednesday for a pair of non-conference matches hosted by UNC Pembroke. Mount Olive faces Virginia Union at 6 p.m. and UNC Pembroke at 8 p.m.
