Trojans Fall In Straight Sets To Belmont Abbey

Danielle Plante and Montgomery Register led with six kills apiece, but it was not enough as the University of Mount Olive fell 25-22, 25-11, 25-12 to Belmont Abbey College Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball in Belmont, N.C.

The first set went back and forth as Mount Olive (2-13 Overall, 1-4 Conference Carolinas) exchanged the first 10 points of the set with Belmont Abbey (10-7, 4-2). The Trojans took their first lead after a Danielle Stachura took a set over the net for a 6-5 margin.

The Crusaders managed to take a 14-11 lead but was unable to extend it any further than three as the Trojans crept back in to tie the set at 15. Belmont Abbey rebounded and used a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 23-17. Mount Olive stopped the run and rallied for four straight points to bring the score to 23-21. The Crusaders took the first set after back-to-back points.

In the second set Mount Olive and Belmont Abbey battled again until the Crusaders jumped out to a 17-6 lead. A block by the Trojans ended a run by the Crusaders; however Belmont Abbey continued to strike the ball well with only four errors and won the second set 25-11.

Belmont Abbey took another early set lead 4-0 in the third set before Montgomery Register recorded a kill to stop the Crusader charge. Mount Olive was unable to recover from the early set run as the Trojans fell in the third set.

Head coach Colby Mangum talked about her outtake from the game.

"We had a really strong first set. There were low errors and the serve-receive was strong. The next two sets we were just not able to sustain that. Although no one likes a lose we we able to get some good things out of it moving forward."

Mount Olive will remain on the road as the Trojans head to Pfeiffer University on Sunday October 4 at 2 p.m.
