Trojans Drop Both Games In Barton Tri-Match

WILSON, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team fell in both matches at the Barton Tri-Match in Wilson, N.C. The Trojans fell 3-1 to the Bulldogs of Barton College in game one and 3-0 to the Bears of Shaw University in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The match opened up with the Bulldogs opening a five-point lead over the Trojans 9-4.
  • Mount Olive pulled ahead by one, 12-11, before Barton closed out the set on a 13-7 run to win 25-19.

SECOND SET

  • Set two began with the Trojans opening up a small lead over the Bulldogs, 8-4.
  • BC tied the set 11 all and took a five-point lead, 20-15, after going on a 9-4 run.
  • Mount Olive rallied back following a 10-1 run to win the second set 25-21.

THIRD SET

  • Barton jumped out to a 12-4 lead to open the third set.
  • Their lead increased to 22-9 before a 7-1 run by the Trojans put the score at 23-16.
  • In the end, BC scored the last two points to win set three 25-16.

FOURTH SET

  • Neither team gained control of the set until midway through the match. 
  • Barton went on a seven-point run to put the score at 20-15.
  • The Trojans closed the gap to two, 20-18, but the Bulldogs had momentum on their side as they won out the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • The Trojans started the second match of the day with a chip on their shoulder coming out of the gate on an eight-point run.
  • The Bears responded in kind as they went on an 11-3 run to tie the set.
  • The Trojans regained the lead to go up by two, 16-14, but let the Bears come back to tie it again at 16 all.
  • Shaw closed out the set on a 9-4 rally to win 25-20.

SECOND SET

  • Neither team held a firm lead as the second set went back-and-forth with four ties before Shaw took the 9-6 lead.
  • Six straight points by the Bears increased their lead to eight, but the Trojans kicked it into gear to pull back within three, 20-17.
  • The Trojans kept fighting until the last point, but time ran out as they dropped the second set 25-21 to the Bears.

THIRD SET

  • The Bears jumped out early but the Trojans came back to tie the set eight all.
  • UMO pulled ahead by three, 14-11, before the scored knotted up again on three-straight Shaw points.
  • The score sat at 24 all following seven ties and three lead changes, but two kills by the Bears closed the third set as they won 26-24 and the match 3-0.
