Mount Olive Drops Both Matches On Final Day Of FMU Tournament

Florence, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team dropped both contests on the final day of the Francis Marion Tournament. 

GAME 1 RECAP
Score: Lenior-Rhyne 3 - Mount Olive 0 (30-28, 25-10, 25-20)
Records: Mount Olive 1-7; Lenior-Rhyne 7-0

HOW IT HAPPENED
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Mount Olive and Lenior-Rhyne were tied five all before the Trojans took a four-point lead on a Cyerra Carter kill and three consecutive aces from Michaela Seawell.
  • The Trojan lead grew to six points, 14-8 on three kills and two Bear errors.
  • UMO maintained a three to four point lead through most of the match and had the chance to win the set as they held a 24-21 lead, but Lenior-Rhyne fought back on a 9-4 run to win the first set 30-28.
  • Mount Olive recorded 15 kills in the opening set.

SECOND SET

  • LRU opened the second set on a 10-4 run over UMO.
  • The Trojans recorded six more points in the second set but the Bears lead was too much to overcome as LRU took set two 25-10.

THIRD SET

  • UMO showed a spark as they opened the third set with a 6-2 run that came from six Lenior-Rhyne errors.
  • The Bears came back to tie the score at 11 all following a 9-5 run.
  • The two teams were neck and neck with the score tying four times, last at 16 all, before Lenior-Rhyne closed out the set on a 9-4 rally winning the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • Newberry quickly took the advantage in the opening set as they sat 9-4 early in the first set.
  • The Trojans pulled within two points on a 4-1 run, trailing 10-8, on two kills by Ania Keene and two Wolves errors.
  • The Wolves answered with a 9-0 run that put them up 11 points leading 19-8.
  • Mount Olive scored a handful of points but could not overcome the point gap as Newberry took set one 25-12.

SECOND SET

  • Mount Olive kept within two points of Newberry trailing 7-5 but fell behind as the Wolves went on a 6-1 rally putting the score at 13-6.
  • The Trojans scored five straight points midway through the set to put the score at 21-14 forcing Newberry to call timeout.
  • UMO ran out of time before they could catch Newberry who won the second set 25-17.

THIRD SET

  • The Trojans fell behind in the third set early as the Wolves took a 9-5 lead right out the gate.
  • UMO trailed by 10 points following a 6-0 run by Newberry who led 16-6.
  • Mount Olive tallied seven points throughout the remainder of the set but fell in the end 25-13 to the Wolves.

NEXT UP

The Trojans return to Mount Olive, N.C., for their season home opener against regional opponent UNC Pembroke on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Braves and Trojans are set for first serve at 6:00 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
