Mount Olive, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team split their doubleheader falling to the Bulldogs of Barton College in three sets and defeating the Broncos of Fayetteville State in four at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C., on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

  • Barton opened the match taking an early 9-3 lead over Mount Olive in the opening set.
  • The Trojans battled back on a 7-5 run that included four UMO kills and three Bulldog errors.
  • BC countered with a 10-3 rally that put them ahead 23-13 as Mount Olive called a timeout.
  • UMO scored three straight points coming out of the timeout but Barton found the last two points needed to take the opening set 25-16.

SECOND SET

  • The Bulldogs took an early 3-1 lead but three consecutive Barton errors gave the Trojans a 4-3 lead.
  • UMO continued to hold their lead following a 6-3 run that put the score at 10-6 in UMO's favor after three kills and three BC errors.
  • Mount Olive's lead grew to 18-11 as three kills and five Barton errors contributed to the UMO 8-5 rally and forced Barton to call a timeout.
  • Barton chipped away at the Trojans 18-11 lead, coming back to tie the match at 22 all following an 11-4 run from the Bulldogs.
  • BC closed out the set with three kills to take the second set 25-23.

THIRD SET

  • The third set opened with the Bulldogs taking a 7-1 run over the Trojans who called a timeout to strategize.
  • Barton held on to their six-point lead with the score sitting at 14-8 after the teams went on a 7-7 run.
  • BC held on to their lead throughout the remainder of the set taking set three 25-17 and the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Play-by-Play

FIRST SET

  • UMO bounced back after the loss to Barton to open the game against Fayetteville State with an 8-4 run that included five kills and three Bronco errors.
  • Mount Olive took a six-point lead, 16-8, following an 8-5 run that consisted of three Trojan kills, two Kamber Skeen aces and three FSU errors.
  • FSU battled back to trail by two points, 23-21, following their 13-7 rally, but UMO found Ania Keene for a kill and Kamber Skeen for an ace to close the set 25-21.

SECOND SET

  • The Broncos came out in the second set to take an early 6-3 lead over the Trojans.
  • FSU led by seven points, 14-7, but UMO climbed within four-points, 16-12, of the Fayetteville State on a 5-2 run.
  • Following the Broncos timeout, the Trojans came back to tie the set at 20 all on an 8-4 run. Four Trojan kills, two aces, one each from Skeen and Andrea Rivera-Reyes, and two Bronco errors aided in the UMO rally.
  • Fayetteville State took a 22-20 lead but Mount Olive came back on a 4-2 run to tie the set at 24 all before a Bronco kill and Trojan error gave FSU the last two points needed to take the set 26-24.

THIRD SET

  • Mount Olive opened the third set with some fire as they took an 11-4 lead right out the gates.
  • UMO held on to an eight-point lead, 18-10, following an 8-6 run that included four kills and four errors.
  • The Trojans closed out the third set on a 7-5 rally to win 25-15 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

FOURTH SET

  • Set four began with the Broncos taking a 5-2 lead over the Trojans. 
  • UMO fought back following a 6-3 run to tie the set at eight all that included five Trojan kills.
  • Mount Olive held a slim 12-11 lead before a 6-0 run gave them a more comfortable lead of 18-11. Five kills, two from Brittany Barnett and three from Rivera-Reyes, contributed to the run.
  • The Trojans held off the rallying Broncos to win the fourth set 25-20, despite FSU leading the way on an 8-7 run.

KEY STATS

  • Four Trojans tallied double-digit numbers in the kill category including Andrea Rivera-Reyes (15), Brittany Barnett (15), Ania Keene (14), and Kamber Skeen (10).
  • Skeen had her third triple-double in 10 days tallying 10 kills, 32 assists, and 15 digs against the Broncos.
  • Rivera-Reyes had a double-double with her 15 kills and 13 digs.

Mount Olive is back in action this weekend as the team travels to Tigerville and Central, S.C., for the final road weekend of the season. The Trojans take on the Crusaders of North Greenville on Friday at 7 p.m. and play on Saturday at Southern Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
