University of Mount Olive head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach Matt van Lierop will step down to pursue other coaching opportunities following the conclusion of the 2019 season, it was announced Wednesday by UMO Vice President for Athletics Jeff Eisen. Van Lierop has been the head coach of the Trojans since 2009.
"Matt has put UMO on the map in cross country and track and field," said Eisen. "He's an outstanding coach and we appreciate all that he's done for the athletics program and university."
Under the guidance of van Lierop, the Trojans track and field and cross country teams competed in 26 NCAA DII Championships, had 46 All-Americans, 40 Regional and Conference Championships, and two Academic All-Americans.
A nationwide search is underway to fill the position.
