Mt. Olive College wins 9th Annual York Men’s Volleyball Classic; Cardinals are Runner-Up after 3-1 Record

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 | BOX SCORE 3 | BOX SCORE 4 JAMAICA, N.Y. — Mount Olive College took home the Ninth Annual York College Men's Volleyball Classic for the second straight season and the third time in tournament history, after going a perfect 4-0 over the weekend.  Host York College finished as the runner-up, after going 3-1.

Mt. Olive did not drop a set in its four victories, topping Lasell College on Friday and defeating NYU-Polytechnic and Lancaster Bible College in the first two matches on Saturday.  Mt. Olive then faced off with York in the final match of the weekend and bested the Cardinals in three sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-16) to clinch the title.

York (17-7) started off the weekend winning a five-set thriller over Lancaster Bible on Friday afternoon.  The Cardinals got big efforts from Leszek Stankiewicz, who had 15 kills (.414) and six blocks, and Emmanuel Geffrard, who slammed 14 kills and recorded six digs, to help the Cardinals squeak out the win.  Avinash Thomas added ten kills, 15 assists and nine digs.

In their second match of the day on Friday, York cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) win over Wells College.  Stankiewicz once again had a big game, with 12 kills and Edner Geffrard registered 12 kills and three blocks.  Libero Terrence Sutton led the way on defense with 13 digs.

On Saturday, in perhaps the most exciting match of the weekend, York won a hard-fought match over New Jersey City University 3-1 (25-16, 27-25, 23-25, 27-25).  The Cardinals avenged a loss to NJCU from earlier in the season and defeated the Gothic Knights for the first time since 1996.  Stankiewicz was one short of a season-high in kills, with 16, while Edner Geffrard finished with 12 kills once again.  Sutton was tough on defense, registering 15 digs.  Jon Peter Sardea (21 assists) and Thomas (22 assists) were both solid at the setter position.

Stankiewicz was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts, while Sutton was named the Top Libero of the Tournament.  Angel Dache of Mount Olive College was the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
