No. 7 Mount Olive Wins Battle Of Runs Over USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. --- No. 7 University of Mount Olive baseball team battled back to defeat the Pacers of USC Aiken 21-14 on Saturday afternoon in Aiken, S.C.

How It Happened


  • Mount Olive saw themselves behind early as USC Aiken plated three runs in the bottom of the first.
  • The Trojans responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second as JT Stone scored on a wild pitch and Drew Ellis scored on an RBI-groundout by Justin Carroll.
  • The Pacers again proved to have the upper hand as they quickly added nine runs over the next two innings taking a 12-2 lead after the bottom of the third.
  • Carroll helped get UMO back on track with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.
  • Both squads exchanged a single run in the fifth and went into the top of the seventh with a 13-5 USCA lead.
  • The seventh inning saw a Nate Estes' RBI-double and an Ellis two-run home run bring UMO a bit closer as the Trojans trailed 13-9 heading into the bottom half.
  • Tha Pacers answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to five.
  • In need of a spark, Mount Olive drew to within a run as the Trojans pushed home four runs in the top of the eighth.
  • Down to their final set of at-bats, the Trojans had their biggest inning of the season scoring eight runs highlighted by two home runs, one by Justin Carroll, a two-RBI blast, and one by Drew Ellis, a three-RBI no-doubter shot, to put Mount Olive up 21-14.
  • The Trojans shut down USC Aiken in the bottom of the ninth in order and evened the series at a game apiece.


  • Drew Ellis and Justin Carroll led the team with five RBI each on the day.
  • Nate Estes was close behind with four RBI and a 2-for-5 performance from the plate.
  • Sam Guckin (1-0) was credited with the win in relief as he allowed just a single hit in his inning of work.
