Matt Shields tallied four goals and two assists and Tyler Feniello won 14-of-21 face offs as nationally 12th-ranked University of Mount Olive posted a rain-soaked 12-5 victory over North Greenville University in Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse Saturday at Amon Field. The contest was the Trojans' conference opener.
The entire game was played in a steady rainfall that helped cause a series of turnovers by both teams. Puddles on the field were big enough that participating players could have been certified for scuba by the end of the game.
Mount Olive (6-2 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) broke a scoreless tie past the midway point of the first period as goals 50 seconds apart by Jesse Mitchell and Stephen Bowlan gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead with 5:37 remaining. Eddie Hendrickson added a goal with 1:37 left in the period, but North Greenville (1-6, 1-1) answered 45 seconds later on Hunter Burgett's goal to close within 3-1 after one period.
The two teams exchanged goals early in the second period before Mount Olive started to pull away. Goals by Shields and Clayton Warren gave the Trojans a 6-2 halftime lead.
Shields provided the only scoring of the third period with a pair of goals in the first four minutes, including a fastbreak shorthanded goal. Goals by Dylan Hickey and Mitchell in the first 69 seconds of the fourth period stretched the Trojans' lead to 10-2.
North Greenville scored with 8:43 left to end the Trojans' run and Drew Wassenaar added a pair of man-up goals for the Crusaders in the final five minutes.
Mitchell added two goals for Mount Olive, while six other Trojans scored a goal. Alex Tindall had a pair of assists. Ross bowman finished with six saves. The Trojans outshot the Crusaders 37-13.
Wassenaar led North Greenville with three goals. Will Thornton recorded 13 saves in goal.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Game time is 2 p.m.
