Mount Olive Drops 2-1 To Newberry

Azzam Dhamra gave University of Mount Olive a late goal in the 89th minute however, the Trojans were unable to find the equalizer as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Newberry College Tuesday night for non-conference men's soccer. Mount Olive had the edge in the second period as they outshot the Wolves 8-to-3.

Mount Olive (2-5-2) conceded two goals in the first period. The first came off a free kick in the 16th minute from 40 yards out that curved just inside the far post and past the diving Trojan keeper. The second goal for Newberry (4-3-1) was on the second consecutive corner kick for the Wolves taken by Lucas Ferrira and although Mount Olive was able to defend the first corner, Ferrira found the foot of Tomas Garcia for the goal.

The Trojans held Newberry off the board for the remainder of the game and looked to capitalize in the second period. In the 69th minute, Nikoli Iotov hit a rocket of a shot that went through a pack of Newberry defenders and was headed for the back lower 90 of the net, but was saved just in the nick of time by the keeper to keep Mount Olive off the board.

Mount Olive was not kept off the board however in the final minute of the game. Fernando Tacuri just missed a goal by inches as the Newberry keeper deflected the shot away with 1:40 left on the clock. The deflection opened the door for Dhamra to punch one in and give the Trojans a shot to equalize.

Newberry kept the ball away from the Trojans in the finals seconds of the game and Mount Olive never was able to get an equalizing chance despite outshooting Newberry 12-to-10 for the game.

Mount Olive has a few days off before traveling to Banner Elk, N.C. to take on Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae on Saturday. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
