Men's Tennis Dominates Methodist Fall Tournament

Fayetteville, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive men's tennis team dominated the Methodist University Fall Tournament with eight championships in Fayetteville, N.C.

Location: Gene Clayton Tennis Center, Fayetteville, N.C.


  • The Trojans owned singles competition sweeping all six draws.
  • Mount Olive did not drop a single match to a non-Trojan opponent in the tournament.
  • Sophomore Jose Cortijos grabbed the win at No. 1 singles with a victory over fellow Trojan sophomore Ogulcan Deniz.
  • At No. 2 singles, sophomore Martin Moser topped senior Martim Sousa.
  • No. 3 singles was won by freshman Jack Middleton, while junior Sherzod Akramov took the title at No. 4 singles.
  • Sophomore Jacob Clarke and freshman Juan Arbelaez took victories at no. 5 and 6 singles, respectively
  • In doubles play, the Trojans captured championships in the first and second flights.
  • Sousa and Moser paired up to capture victory in the first doubles flight.
  • In the second doubles flight, sophomores Ogulcan Deniz and Clarke earned the championship.
  • Overall, Mount Olive was 22-2 in competition in the tournament with both losses coming to fellow Trojans.


  • " I am really proud of our team. To win every singles flight in a tournament like this is difficult and it shows that our returners from last year are motivated and focused," said men's tennis head coach Kevin Coghill. "I am really pleased with our freshmen.  They both had to win three-set matches in their finals. It shows that we not only have talented newcomers, but also they are mentally tough." 


The men's tennis team competes in the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament in Sumter, S.C. September 30 through October 3.
