Trojans Fall To Barton In Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship Game

Wilson, N.C. ---  The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team saw its season come to an end in a 3-0 loss to Barton College, 18-25, 15-25, 17-25, in the Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Tournament championship game on Saturday night in Wilson, N.C.

How It Happened


  • Barton took an early lead in the opening set, 10-6.
  • The Trojans used a 3-0 run featuring a pair of service aces by junior Robert Poole to get back within a point at 10-9.
  • The Bulldogs responded with an 8-1 run that gave Barton an 18-10 advantage.
  • UMO got back within five at 20-15 with a 5-2 run, but Barton held on for the 25-18 opening set win.
  • The Bulldogs hit .550 in the set to UMO's .087.


  • Opening the second set, UMO found itself in an early 10-4 hole.
  • The Trojans crept back within five at 15-10, but Barton manufactured a 7-2 run to take control of the set with a 22-12 advantage.
  • Three-straight points for UMO got the Trojans back within seven at 22-15, but the Bulldogs responded with three-straight points of their own for the 25-15 set win.


  • Barton continued to hold the momentum early in the third set as the Bulldogs grabbed a 6-0 lead forcing a Trojan timeout.
  • UMO got within four at 7-3 and held the deficit there at 13-9.
  • The Bulldogs answered with a 4-0 run to give Barton a 17-9 lead.
  • Barton pulled away late for the 25-17 third set win and the match victory.


  • Poole led the Trojans with nine kills in the match.
  • Junior Jeff Yasalonis tallied 16 assists to lead UMO.
  • The Trojans were outhit in the match by Barton, .403 to .049.


  • Poole and junior Josh Donahue were named to the 2017 Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball all-tournament team. 


  • The loss ends the Trojans' season with an 18-10 overall record and a 14-4 mark in Conference Carolinas regular season play.
