Trojans Fall To The Bulldogs From Barton In A Conference Carolinas Showdown

WILSON, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell to the Bulldogs of Barton College in four sets on Tuesday evening in Conference Carolinas action at Wilson Gymnasium in Wilson, N.C.

Score: Barton 3, Mount Olive 1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20)

How It Happened


  • Mount Olive got off to a good start in the first set as they went up 10-6 over the home Bulldogs. Two service aces, four kills, and four Barton errors contributed to the UMO lead.
  • The Trojan lead grew to five points, 14-9, before BC called a timeout following three Trojan kills and a bad Barton serve.
  • Following the timeout, Barton went on a 5-1 run closing the Trojans lead to one point, 15-14, midway through the set.
  • UMO put together a 4-1 run taking a 19-15 lead and forcing another Barton timeout.
  • The Bulldogs came out of the timeout scoring five straight points to take the lead, 20-19, and closed out the set on a 5-2 spurt to win set one 25-21.


  • The Trojans took a 7-3 lead to open the second set that included four service aces, two each by Bret Rutledge and Robert Poole.
  • Barton came back on a 6-3 run tying the set at nine all on four kills, a UMO error, and a service ace.
  • Both teams battled back and forth with UMO going ahead by two or three points only to have the Bulldogs come back to tie the set at 15 all.
  • The score tied up three times, last time at 20 all, before the Trojans closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21 and tie the match at one set each.


  • The Bulldogs opened the third set getting out to an early 11-4 lead.
  • Mount Olive kicked things into gear going on a 10-6 run to pull within three points, 17-14, of the Barton. Six Bulldog errors, three Trojan kills and a Yigit Erkek ace all contributed to the run.
  • UMO fought to rally back but BC held on to their lead to win the third set 25-18 and take a 2-1 match lead.


  • Barton carried the momentum from the third set into the fourth as they opened up a 10-4 lead following a Mount Olive timeout.
  • The Trojans fought back, pulling within two points, 16-14, on six kills and four BC errors to force a timeout.
  • Following the timeout, the Bulldogs went on a 9-5 run to close out the set winning 25-19 and the match 3-1.


  • Robert Poole's 13 kills put him at 955 career kills and only five kills away from tying the program record.
  • Poole served up six aces for the second time this season. His season total is now at 67 and he sits at 174 in his career. He holds both the season and career record in service aces.
  • Jeff Yasalonis tallied 33 assists in the match. He now has 2,475 assists in his career and only 15 away from 2,500.


Mount Olive returns to action on Friday, April 6, as they travel to Banner Elk, N.C., for the final weekend of Conference Carolinas action. The Trojans will face the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College at 7 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
