Trojans Fall In Three To No. 9 Flyers

BRISTOL, TENN. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team fell to the No. 9 Flyers of Lewis University in three sets on Saturday night at the Student Center Complex in Bristol, Tenn.

How It Happened


  • The Flyers got off to a hot start scoring the first six points of the opening set.
  • Mount Olive found themselves trailing 12-3 before long and forced the Trojans to call their second timeout of the set.
  • Following the timeout, UMO went on a 7-3 run that put the score at 16-10 still in Lewis' favor.
  • The remainder of the set was all the Flyers as they went on a 9-2 streak to close out the set 25-12.


  • Lewis got things started in the second set taking the first three points. 
  • A kill by Tobi Azeez followed by an ace from the Australian freshman put the score at 3-2.
  • The Flyers scored another three points but a 6-4 run by the Trojans brought the score to 10-8 as UMO trailed by two.
  • As the teams approached the midway point, Lewis had taken a 19-11 lead following a 9-3 run by the Flyers.
  • Back-to-back service aces by Shane Yeo gave Mount Olive 16 points but Lewis put down the final kill to win set two 25-16.


  • Set three began with Lewis taking an early 10-5 lead.
  • The Flyers sat ahead 19-10 but UMO scored five straight points capped with a pair of kills from Azeez and Eric Visgitis climbing within four points, 19-15, as Lewis called timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout both teams traded points back and forth with Lewis holding a late 24-18 lead.
  • UMO scored two more points following a Flyers ball handling error and kill by Nicolas Laxar but Lewis scored the final point off a kill from Moses to win the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.


Mount Olive concludes the three-day road trip with a Sunday matinee at Lincoln Memorial in Cumberland Gap, Tenn., on Jan. 13 at 1 PM.
