Trojans Fall In Five To NGU Crusaders

TIGERVILLE, S.C. --- Mount Olive lost a hard-fought five-set match against the Crusaders of North Greenville University on Friday evening in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball at Hayes Gymnasium in Tigerville, S.C. Freshman Jarrod Ferguson led the Trojan attack with 13 kills while senior Brad Monaghan was close behind with 11 of his own.

How It Happened


  • NGU opened the first set with a 5-3 run to take an early lead over UMO.
  • The Trojans came back on a 4-1 run to take a one-point lead, 7-6, following a kill by Luke Visgitis and three Crusader errors.
  • North Greenville led a 7-5 run to take a slim 13-12 lead as the teams approached the midway point of the opening set.
  • UMO countered with a 7-4 run of their own to take a one-point, 19-17, lead following four kills, two each from Brad Monaghan and Jarrod Ferguson, and three NGU errors.
  • A 3-1 Crusader run knotted the score at 20 all before the Trojans took the 22-20 lead following back-to-back Greenville errors.
  • The squads traded a pair of points before NGU called timeout, and following the break, the Crusaders led a 4-2 run to knot the score at 24 all.
  • The teams went point-for-point until the Crusaders recorded two errors and UMO ended the set with the 29-27 win.


  • The Crusaders opened set two with a 6-3 run with the Trojans scoring two kills from Ferguson and Eric Visgitis.
  • UMO scored three straight points to pull within a point, 7-6, before the Crusaders took four in a row to lead 11-6 as the Trojans called timeout.
  • Mount Olive climbed back within two of North Greenville, 13-11, following a 5-2 run that included a Monaghan ace, an Eric Visgitis kill and three Crusader errors.
  • NGU opened their lead back out to seven points, 19-12, after the Crusaders went on a 6-1 run.
  • The Trojans scored five points to pull within three, 20-17, on two kills by Iyanu Adebisi and three Crusader errors. 
  • Following their own called timeout, NGU went on a 5-2 rally to close out the set and win 25-19.


  • Mount Olive opened set three on a 6-3 run that included two kills, an ace by Ferguson and three NGU errors.
  • NGU closed the gap to three points, 9-6, but the Trojans opened their lead back out to eight points, 14-6, following five consecutive points after UMO recorded four kills and an ace from Shane Yeo.
  • UMO's lead was extended to 10-points, 21-11, after a 5-5 even run, but the Crusaders came back on a 5-0 run to trail by five, 21-16.
  • The Trojans held off the rallying Crusaders with a pair of kills and two NGU errors to win the third set 25-17.


  • The two squads were neck and neck through the opening services as the score sat tied at seven all.
  • UMO found a three-point advantage, 13-10, following a pair of kills, one each from Max Cristina and Monaghan, and a service ace from Luke Visgitis.
  • North Greenville countered with a 6-1 run to take a 16-14 lead.
  • The Trojans remained within two points until the Crusaders scored three in a row to lead by five points, 23-18, as UMO called a timeout.
  • Mount Olive scored once more but North Greenville found the two points needed to win the fourth set 25-19.


  • The fifth set began with the Crusaders taking a sizable 9-2 lead over the Trojans.
  • UMO scored three consecutive points to pull within four points, 9-5, leading into an NGU timeout.
  • The Trojans ran out of time as the Crusaders scored the six points needed to win the fifth set 15-10.
  • Mount Olive tallied just three kills in the fifth set while the remaining seven came from North Greenville errors.



Mount Olive turns around for their second contest of the weekend as the Trojans head to Gaffney, S.C., to face Limestone College. The Trojans and Saints face off at 2 p.m. in the Timken Center.
