Trojans Fall To Bulldogs In Four Sets

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The Mount Olive Trojans fell to the Bulldogs of Barton College in four sets on Tuesday evening in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. Tobi Azeez led the way for the Trojan attack with 18 kills while the Visigitis brothers, Luke and Eric, joined him in double-digit kills with 12 and 11 respectively.

How It Happened


  • Barton started the opening set on a 4-1 run but the Trojans stuck with the Bulldogs to keep within one, 7-6, after a service ace from Jarrod Ferguson.
  • Following the Ferguson ace, BC went on a 4-0 run taking an 11-6 lead and forced Mount Olive to call a timeout to regroup.
  • UMO responded with a 4-1 run out the timeout that included a kill each from Tobi Azeez and Luke Visgitis, an ace from Azeez and an attacking error by a Bulldog, all of which put the score at 12-10 Bartons favor.
  • Barton took a five point lead, 15-10, following a 3-0 run, but Mount Olive forced a BC timeout after climbing back within two, 17-15, following a 5-2 run that included a Ferguson kill, a Shane Yeo ace, and three errors by the Bulldogs.
  • The Bulldogs again opened up a five-point lead, 22-17, coming out of the timeout on a 5-2 run as UMO called their second timeout, and closed out the set on a 3-1 run to win the opening frame 25-18.


  • BC again started the set with a 4-1 run, but UMO hung tight pulling within two, 6-4, following a kill by Eriv Visgitis.
  • Barton took a four-point lead, 8-4, but Mount Olive closed the gap to one, 8-7, with back-to-back kills from Ferguson and Brad Monaghan, and an attack error from Barton.
  • UMO continued on their run knotting the set at 10-all following an ace from Azeez.
  • The teams tied the score eight times through the middle of the set as a kill from Luke Visgitis knotted it at 19-all.
  • The Trojans took a two-point lead following back-to-back aces by Azeez that forced BC to call a timeout trailing 21-19.
  • Following the timeout, Barton went on a 4-1 run to take a one-point lead 23-22 as Mount Olive called a timeout to strategize.
  • UMO scored two to take a 24-23 lead following back-to-back kills from Ferguson and Azeez, but Barton tied things up at 24 all on a kill of their own.
  • Azeez and Eric Visgitis combined for back-to-back kills to give Mount Olive the two-points needed to take set two over Barton College and even up the match score at one set each.


  • Mount Olive carried some of the momentum from set two into the third set as they opened play with a 7-5 run. Four Barton errors and three kills, one each from Ferguson, Eric Visgitis, and Monaghan, all contributed to the run.
  • Barton remainded within two of the Trojans but were forced to call a timeout following a point for UMO that put the score at 14-11 Trojan lead.
  • The Bulldogs came back to tie things up five times, last at 22 all, following an 11-8 run led by BC following a Trojan service error.
  • UMO called timeout trailing 23-22 but could not find the points following the break as BC took set three 25-22 on back-to-back attack errors by the Trojans.


  • Barton opened the fourth set with an 8-4 run that included four points off Trojan errors.
  • UMO scored on back-to-back kills from Ferguson and Eric Visgitis to pull within two, 8-6, but called a timeout following two points from Barton that put the score at 10-6.
  • The Bulldogs went on a 5-2 rally coming out of the break and heading into a second one as UMO used their second timeout of the set trailing 15-8.
  • Mount Olive fought valiantly to climb back within four points, 18-14, following a 6-3 run, but could not find the points when needed to overcome the Bulldogs and force a fifth set as BC closed out set four on a 7-5 run winning 25-19 and the match 3-1.


  • Tobi Azeez led the way for the Trojan attack with 18 kills on 47 attacks.
  • Luke Visgitis and Eric Visgitis, joined Azeez in double-digit kills with 12 and 11 respectively.
  • Shane Yeo set up 43 assists.
  • Joel Roberts, Shane Yeo and Jarrod Ferguson all tallied double digit dig numbers with 14, 12, and 10 respectively.
  • As a team the Trojans had ten service aces. Azeez led in this category with a career-high six on the evening.


Mount Olive returns to action on Friday when they wrap up the regular season home conference slate against the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. The Trojans and Crusaders meet at 6 p.m. for the first serve at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. UMO will turn around and host the Royals of Queens (N.C.) for the regular season finale at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Seniors Joel Roberts and Brad Monaghan will be recognized prior to the start of the match for their hard work and dedication to the Green and White.
